Does brief really mean short?

There are this books called

a brief guide to writing academics

a brief guide to writing from readings

a brief guide to business classics

as far as I know brief means a piece of writing that doesn't contain too many words

how can a book be brief?


also there are some blogs like

brief history of computer

brief history of electricity

brief information on independence day etc etc.

which are also long.

If all information about X consists of 2 books, then we can't really call a one-book guide to X a Brief Guide to X. Instead, a Brief Guide to X might consist of a few pages.

The adjective means "of short duration". The noun is a concise report or account. The adjective "brief" in titles is often slightly tongue-in-cheek, sometimes even ironic. Hawking's Brief History of Time is a good example.

A book can be brief by comparison if it only superficially covers a large topic. I use my History of Art as a stepstool.
