Examples:
DO you know how to answer this question?
we use "do"to begin a question
ARE you telling us the truth?
we use "are" to begin a question
IS that all you have in your pocket?
we use "is" to begin a question

My question is:
How do we know when to use which question verb to start a question?

'Be' forms are used to start questions using 'be' as the main verb ('Are you deaf?') and for continuous and passive verb forms ('Was he studying? Were they invited?').

'Do/Does/Did' is used for everything else.
