Do/did + infinitive

When do I normally use "do/did" + infinitive in positive sentences?
Like "Yesterday I really did buy a book in German."
Or "She does know it!"

Are there any rules or is it just a strong accentuation?

Thank you all! Emotion: smile

Thanks. Do we use that only with present simple and past simple tenses or also with the others?

For example: I did have been tired. (Sounds to me like you are serious and you're really tired..)

And what is with the verb 'to be' ? I really do be tired? Sounds kinda weird
