Well, if the author says that, go with it. Two other people have told you that there is no significant difference, so I see no problem.

I'm not familiar with the expression "passar battaglia." It sounds 19th century, at least. By the look of it, though, it could mean "dodge a fight." I'm sure your author is more knowlegeable in the history of chess than I am, so I see no reason to doubt his word.
