Documents place over/on the top/on the surface..

Documents are placed over the printer.
Documents are placed on the top of the printer.
Documents are placed on the surface of the printer.

Which any of them sounds right?

'over' isn't good. It's like 'above'. It doesn't mean 'touching the surface of', which is what you want, I suppose.
