Doctors notice

my roommate is 8 moths pregnant , we went in for a doctors appointment at 1130am today. at 430 they said we had to go to the city for 10am tomarrow morning and sit their for 2 weeks on observation. I had told her my 11 year son was home and my 21 year old son woulnt be here till 4 pm tomorrow, this was said to the doctor before she had made the appointment in the city which means I have to leave an 11 year old boy at home alone for 24 hours, so first question here is shouldn't we have some kind of notice like a 24 hour notice before the appointment so we have time to at least get a babysitter? and secondly if shes their for 2 weeks on observation why is it that the father of the child is not allowed to stay their with her for this? instead he has to drive 6 hours a day for her or spend 2 grand or better on a hotel?
