Doctorate in English

Hello!
I wanted to know the basic requirements and standards that anyone who wanted to get a Doctorate in English should meet. I wouldn't be doing it in the next, maybe 4 or 6 years, so I thought I could get a head-start in improving english.

Thank you. And, what is the best way to prepare for all of it? Should it be buying books, joining courses etc. etc. or just casual improvement of language?
