Dock, Port and Harbor

Hi,

I'm wondering what the difference is between a Dock, a Port and a Harbor.
I figured a Port was the city where a Dock/Harbor is located, am I right?

Regards,

Vince..

Port : a place (seaport or airport) where people and merchandise can enter or leave a country. Dock : landing in a harbor next to a pier where ships are loaded and unloaded or repaired. Harbor : a sheltered port where ships can take on or discharge cargo.

  • It seems to me that a harbor is a type of port and a dock is part of a harbor .
  • From another viewpoint, I think harbor is more concerned with the watery part ( safe harbor ), and port is more concerned with the land part ( a port in any storm ).
