Do you use your arms or legs to laugh? Or does laughing hurt your arms or legs? I don't get this idiom.
split one's sides (with laughter) : Fig. to laugh so hard that one's sides almost split. (Always an exaggeration.)
At first I thought sides mean butt, but I looked up the dictionary and it says: 6. PART OF YOUR BODY the part of your body from the top of your arm to the top of your leg;
However, I don't think laughing has anything to do with this part of body. I use my mouth to laugh. How is it possible that you laugh so hard that your sides split. It has nothing to do with sides. I don't get it.

We normally think of our 'sides' as running from somewhere below our armpits to perhaps the hips.
