Kate:Do you think Mary’s coming to the English club? - Jackie:

A. I hope not. B. I don’t believe.

C. I believe not so D. I believe not.

I opt A. I hope not. However, the answer is “D. I believe not”. Who can explain it to me? Thanks a lot.

I think this is a badly worded question. "I hope not" is correct grammatically, but its meaning is quite different from "I believe not." However, "I believe not" sounds overly formal to me. In ordinary conversation we would probably say "I don't think so" or "I doubt it."
