Do you need "the" there?

Hi,

Please look at the phrases below and tell me whether the two "thes" are necessary and if they are, where they belong. I thought phrases in possssives don't need have articles?

If they are news headlines, you can omit the article.

Tell me if my understanding is wrong. When you have some phrase in genitive??, then almost always the article the is for the noun in genitive and not the noun that comes/follows after the noun in genitive.

the president's cup (here the is for "president" and not for "cup.")

You can say 'a week's leave', 'a mile's distance', &c. as well as 'my father's book' => 'the father's book'.

E.g. 'I knew the boys' names, but this wasn't my secret.' - the names of these boys.
