Do you need help?

Sometimes when I go to a store, I'm asked if I need help. Most of the time I just want to walk around and do not look for something special. So I usually answer "no, thanks." The problem is they often look like weird when I say so. Is this reply too strange or impolite? How should I answer it more appropriately?

They shouldn't really give you a funny look but you could try expanding it a little to sound a bit more polite. 'No thanks, I'm just looking round' or 'No thanks, I'm just browsing'
