What is the difference between:

1. Do you mind if I smoke in here?
2. Do you mind me smoking in here?

These are different structures with the same meaning:

1.Do you mind if I smoke in here?
2.Do you mind my smoking in here? -- ('Me' is used, but is still not formally acceptable)

I thought "my" is more informal than "me". Thanks for your explanation.

The question is almost always phrased as in the first example, in my opinion.
(And the answer is always "Yes" in California. Emotion: smile

In my language we say "Yes" when we don't mind:
ex. Would you mind if I smoke in here? – Yes, please. You can smoke in here.

and we say "No" when we don't want somebody to smoke:
ex. Would you mind if I smoke in here? – No, we don't smoke in here. You can smoke outside.
