Do you know this program "Barefoot Contessa" ?

Hi,

Would you tell me what the writer is suggesting with the underlined part. Since I don't know much about the program, I can't even guess.

What worried me was the thought that I actually belonged in Valencia's house, that of all the homes in New York, my place was here with the Barefoot Contessa.

Thank you,

m

I remember my wife mentioning "The Barefoot Contessa" in the 50's. I never knew if it was a movie or a novel. I'm unable to connect it with "Valencia" on the net.

Dear M

The Barefoot Countessa is a 1954 film. The role is played by Ava Gardner

I understand she plays the part of a proud and carefree woman who is attractive to the male characters but not particularly attracted by them

I guess that Valencia is being compared to her

Hope this helps, Dave

Hi, Dave.

Is the Ava Gardner film set in Colombia (S.A.) or New York?

What was her name?

Hi Avangi

Her name is Maria Vargas. She is discovered as a dancer in Madrid but the main action of the film moves to Hollywood

Not having heard back from M, I don't know what "program" he's referring to or what he's "reading." - A.

Thank you for the reply.

I'm reading an essay by David Sedaris.

This is the longer quote from the story but it didn't click even with your new information. (I thought it the name of a cooking show.)

I'd then pick up the phone and pretend to dial. There was no way I could get heavy-handed and demand that an English person send me money, even if he owed it to me person

It sounds like a personal reminiscence. Was he in her employ at the time? (I think I've read David Sedaris in the New Yorker.)

The section you quoted in your original post simply suggests to me that he was unhappy in his situation.

He was certainly embarrassed at having to put the bite on people who owed her money.

I think Dave was right in suggesting that he was compa

Yes, his essaies are basically based on his real life, and at that moment he was in her employ. So was there a similar situation in the movie? or a lady who are similar to Valencia?

Thank you for your help.
