"Do you hear (the) music?"

Hello Teachers:

Two friends are walking in a forest and one of them suddenly hears music coming from somewhere. He asks his friend:

"Hey, do you hear (the) music?"

My English tutor said the article is optional in this case: whether it is used depends on how certain the person hearing the music is that the other friend can hear it too. In other words,

"Do you hear music?" = do you hear SOME music? (Or: I am not sure if you can hear it.)
"Do you hear the music?" = do you hear THAT music? (Or: I am sure you can hear it.)

I hope I conveyed faithfully this explanation of my tutor's. Do you agree with it? Can can the friend either omit the article or use it without making a grammatical error?

Thank you!

Jerry
