Killing Animals for the Improvement of Man Kind Do Animals have equal rights to humans, and deserve the same treatment? Or, are animals inferior to humans and thus it is justifiable for the researchers to test on them. If animal testing is justifiable, then how far can the researchers go? With the help of animal research, the researchers developed techniques like polio vaccine, kidney transplants, and heart surgery. This research has saved many lives. However, how do human beings justify the testing on beauty products on animals? How many lives have been saved through the testing of beauty products on animals? Is it justifiable to kill animals if no lives are being saved? “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. (“George Orwell”) This was the rule established by the pigs who ruled the farmyard in the book Animal Farm. It was their reason for the cruel and unfair treatment the pigs performed on the other “inferior” animals. Humans take the same position everyday in the laboratory towards the lower structure of animals. Scientists and researchers have been using different animals for many years in the laboratory research. According to one estimate, sixty five million animals have been experimented on in the laboratories annually in the United States (Barton 30). It has been proven at this research, has benefited and increased the knowledge of the human race. However, some people do not think it’s fair for the improvement to happen at the cost of the lives of so many innocent animals. Many people feel that the pain inflicted on the animals is unreasonable to the benefit’s the research may provide. One of the most prevalent abuse is the cosmetic safety testing on animals. Experiments have been performed that have little or no human benefit. The Drays test, uses the chemical found in shampoos and tests it on the eyes of the rabbits. The shampoo is initially harmless if revealed to the human eye, but it causes blindness to the rabbits who are being tested on. Not only is the Drays test roughly painful and harmful to the rabbits, but it provides no practical information. Considering this starting evidence, one must wonder why procedures like this remain legal (Knopf 321). Much of animal research is damaging toward the laboratory animals, and seems to be done for no practical reason. Giving up animals for scientific research devalues the lives of the animals being tested on. This raises serious questions about the importance and value of life. To take life away whether it be that of a human being or an animal is unjustifiable. How would a person feel if someone had taken their life away in the name of scientific research? Any creature that has life and can feel pain should be protected. In many religion’s, humans are initially in this world to protect and cherish life whenever it is found. If our world cheapens the value of the life of an animal, what is to say humans won in turn, cheapen the life of a human being. If animal researchers can do tests on a intelligent chimpanzee, then why shouldn’t the animal researchers be able to test on a human dumber than their chimpanzee. The thought that humans have the right to use anything sub human to our own desires is wrong. If this kind of thinking that led German scientist to perform horrible experiments on Jew’s, who they considered to be sub human. Therefore, this devaluation of animal form be stopped before society totally disregards the value of life as an important moral principle. (Thrioux 400). Some individuals resist the fact that animals having inherent values. Humans simply cannot go against the widely held facts that humans have value equal to that of animals. Should people say only human beings have the reasoning or intelligence to value their life? In many cases, it will not go through. What could be the point of human’s having more value than the animals they intend to abuse this right? Is it the animals who lack intelligence or reason? Humans would have to pass the same judgment on imperfect humans as well. Therefore, humans today can not rationally base the assumption. Just because humans have intelligence and reasoning, researchers think they have an excuse for killing thousands of animals each year in the country today.
