Do you "get" your inherited traits/qualities or "got"?

Dear teachers

The following comment posted on a youtube video:

Dang if I don't want to dance around to this one... I think my grand daughter and I will be bouncing around the house when she comes back over ... She loves to dance ... don't know where she gets it from .... :- ) LoL LoL

Also this headline from an article:
So THAT'S where she gets it from! Jessica Gomes reveals her model genes with retro photograph of her parents
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2648338/Jessica-Gomes-reveals-model-genes-retro-photograph-parents.html

The bolded parts: Shouldn't it be where she got it from because she inherited her genes at birth?

Thanks in advance!

"gets" is the idiomatic word. Probably because she and her mother continue to possess these traits/qualities. Clive

1.What if her mom passes away, would you keep saying "she gets it from"?

2.Can say it for things too, for ex if my uncle gifts me a car, is it correct to say "i get this car from an uncle."

1 I'd usually start saying 'got'.
Same if the daughter died and the mom didn't.

2, No. Say 'got' .
You are no longer using the idiom relating to traits/qualities.

Thank you again sir!

I have one more question; what if you don't know if the person she/he inherited from is still alive, what would you say in that case?

for example I just met a girl.

Girl: "I am tall, just like my father" .......I don't know if the father is alive or not
me: "Ah, now I know where you <get/got> it from!"

Which should I used in cases
