Are there 2 meaning to "do well to"? Are both meaning correct and is only one an idiom because both have different meaning.

You would do well to study for you test.
Does this mean : You better study for you test.

In soccer: He did well to hit the post from that far. I wouldn't have done any better.
Does this mean: He did a good job by hitting the post from that far.

Sure. I don't see two different meanings -- just the same meaning in two different tenses.

would do well to ... ~ would do something good (if you studied ...)
did well to ... ~ did something good (by hitting ...)

The meanings only seem to be different because of the differences in the two situations.
