Do well in

What preposition should be used with "do well" in sentences like "I want to do well in/on the game" ?
I know that in AME we say "do well on a test" whereas in BrE we say "do well in a test". Does the same pattern exist when we are talking about doing well in other things like sports, game, competition etc ?
