Do we use 'was' or 'were'?

Hi, the sentence is: She felt as if she was on top of the world. I feel that it is correct, but am not sure. I need to explain to my daughter's kindy teacher as she corrected 'was' to 'were'. Thanks in advance Emotion: smile
