Do we need to use prepositions with "buy"?

I found the following sentence on a website. However, I cannot understand the associated grammar rules. I mean, why they haven't used a preposition before "their children"?

Some parents buy their children a large number of toys to play with.

If I had written this sentence, I would write it as the following sentence.

Some parents buy a large number of toys for their children to play with.

Therefore, I would really appreciate it if someone could explain this scenario and provide me with some websites to read about this further.
