Do we need a put a "to be verb" in one sentence if we have auxiliary verb "Would"?

Sentence:
I WOULD like to know where exactly ARE factories placed?
Or
I WOULD like to know where exactly factories placed?

I have just read in Longman dictionary that you do not use an article with uncountable or plural nouns, when you are talking about something in general.
