Do we italicise strange words?

Hello Everyone,

I am writing an essay on Arab culture. In one place, I have to mention 'kandhura', a traditional Arab dress.

Do I italicize this word or not? Any strange word... do I have to italicize it, or is that only optional?

Thanks.
