Do we count stanzas in free verse poems?
Hi,
Do we count stanza in free verse poems?
From example, how can I count the number of stanzas in a poem such as "A Dream Deferred."
Is it counted by the space between the lines, so in "A Dream Deferred" there are eight?
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

HifaMo Is it counted by the space between the lines, That's what I would do, at least. I see no other way if one wishes to divide it into 'stanzas' at all. The problem is that free verse does not conform to the second half of the definition of 'stanza': a section of a poem consisting of a group of lines that form a unit in a pattern t hat is repeated through the whole poem

in a typed exam where by only a single verse is typed to the next page due to lack of space on the previous page, can the verse be counted as a stanza?
