Hi Everyone,
Here is a sentence from an activity I created for my class:
How do we make a vanilla cake?
I would like to know how best to explain why the verb 'do' can't be 'are'.
The instructions to students was to insert either 'do', or an aspect of the 'be' verb.
Two students chose 'are'.
Thanks

Cup cake how best to explain why the verb 'do' can't be 'are' Well, one way is to say that in questions do ( do, does, did ) is the auxiliary verb that goes with plain verbs and be ( am, is, are, was, were ) is the auxiliary verb that goes with -ing verbs. You can review the forms of do and the forms of be (above) if you think your students need that kind of review. And/or you can give them a few exercises like the following, asking them to choose the correct form of do or be .
