1. As the sun passed overhead, he marked even divisions on the circle as the shadow of the stick crossed it.

Sentence 2 needs editing - Anonymous the shadow of the stick crossed on the circle When you take that out you could argue that they have similar meanings although it isn't clear in the second what is getting the 'even divisions' marked on it. Common sense tells me that it's the circle but the sentence structure makes me feel it could be the shadow, the stick or even the sun. The first sentence carries more clarity.
