Do these 2 sentences have the same meaning?

Hi,

Question:
Do the following 2 sentences have the same meaning?

Sentences:
I expected noone would work last Sunday.
I did not expect anyone would work last Sunday.

If so, which one is more polite?

Thanks

The second one is more natural. The first one implies that maybe they should have worked, but you expected them to be lazy & they were. The second one implies that you assumed it to be a day off.
