do sth. different

Why is it: "to do sth different" and not "to do sth. differently" because i describe how to do sth.?

It should be differently when you describe how to do something, and it should be different when you name an alternative activity to do.

If you are tired of studying, you should do something different: why not take a break and go to a movie?
If you are tired of studying, you should do something differently: why not take your books outside and study on the veranda?
