Do phrases always have nothing to do with the tense used in a sentence?

As being a honest fellow, I was always trustworthy.

In the above sentence I was always trustworthy gives information about the tense and phrase As being a honest fellow doesn't have anything to do with tense. Do phrases always have nothing to do with the tense used in a sentence?

Phrases give us information about tenses too.

As I was a honest fellow, I was always truthworthy. Of course this doesn't mean that "as being.." is always a past tense. Sometimes you understand this from the flollowing sentences.
