Do objects always have to be in plural?

How would you reword these sentences?

If the sentence "The students who have sent a resume to the director were accepted first" is incorrect--because "resume" isn't in plural, how would you make the distinction between:

"The students who have sent a resume to the director were accepted first"

"The students who have sent two resumes to the director were accepted first"?
