Do native English speakers ever say 'play basket' instead of play 'basketball' tead

In some non-English-speaking countries they shorten the name of the sport to just 'basket'. One American speaker once told me that English speakers always refer to the sport as 'basketball' so they don't say for instance "I'm going to play basket"? True?

Thanks
