Do linguists sometimes use ESL/EFL materials for references?

This might be an off topic question.

Do they use ESL/EFL study materials such as minimal pairs, phonetics, etc...? How linguists study? Why do they have such an ability to recognise wrong pronunciations of non-native english speakers?

mosja Why do they have such an ability to recognise wrong pronunciations of non-native english speakers? I don't know if linguists have that special ability. Most native speakers can recognize foreign accents as well as regional accents.
