Do I use will or would here?

Hi everyone,

I'm writing a short story in the past tense but I was told if I started a clause with "If," I should use will instead of would. But, my story is in the past tense, so do I still replace will with would in the example:

"If Claire was sure about her choice, she would be happy in the end."

(Also, do I need to replace was with were?)

Thank you so much teachers!

'Would' is correct, (at least, if this view is the narrator's). Use 'were' if she was actually unsure; use 'was' if she is still to make her choice (from her viewpoint in time, that is).
