do I use "to" or "from"?

Clothes here function as insulators from cold and water; they exist out of necessity and serve a useful purpose. Do i use "insulators from cold" or "insulators to cold" or something else?

The usual preposition is insulate against.

How do you insulate against water?

You might be surprised at how seldom we use semi-colons.

My dictionary defines insulation as preventing the passage of electricity, heat or sound.

Preventing the entry of water is waterproofing.
