Do I use 'is' or 'are'?

Right, my English is a little rusty from being abroad too long, but here's a simple question I encountered:

Is this correct:

There 'is' a book and a mug on the desk.

If so, how about this?

A book and a mug 'are' on the desk

I have a few more queries:

There 'are' two books and three pens on the desk.

and

Two books and three pens are on the desk.

Thanks!
