Do I use ";" correctly?

Hi,

Question:
Do I use ";" correctly?

Sentence:
When I was a teacher, none of my student failed the final exam; this was the first achievement that I want to mention.

My opinion:
2 sentences are grammatically independent, but they are related.
After ";", the word "this" is not capitalized.
Therefore, I think it is correctly used.

Thanks

You are right in your use and understanding of the semicolon, but your sentence has another little problem or two: When I was a teacher, none of my students failed the final exam; this is the first achievement that I want to mention.
