Do I possess the correct pronoun?

In copy editing the sentence, "Every alum has their own special connection...," I changed the possessive pronoun "their" to "his or her," on the assumption that "every alum" means "every single alum."

Is that correct?
Are there instances where "every (whatever)" does not call for a singular possessive pronoun?

Many thanks,

JJ

The use of their in cases like this is becoming more and more acceptable. I often solve the problem by making the noun plural: all alums have their own special connection(s).
