Do I need to use an article in this context?

I want to use the singular form (instead of plural) for the word 'river' in this sentence:

To him, rivers are the whole world.

Which version should I use:

1) To him, river is the whole world.
2) To him, the river is the whole world.
3) To him, a river is the whole world.
