Vocabulary

Do I need to learn all the phrases and idioms related to a specific vocabulary?

For example, the word cast, has lots of different meanings and also phrases and idioms which are used in different situation. Consider I read a text and find the word "cast" unfamiliar. what's the best strategy???
1) Just reading and learning the meaning of that specific usage of the word.(Using dictionary)
2) Reading and leaning all the different meanings for both noun and verb forms.

Unless you have a super or photographic memory, I would go for option 1. You're much more likely to remember it this way.

I agree with teechr. Having a copy of a thesaurus handy is what I find useful.

Learn a word in context.

Some of the definitions in the dictionary are very rarely used, so don't bother memorizing all of them. The lowest-numbered entries are the most common.

This is a gigantic waste of time. Learn by specific usages, not by dictionary entries.
