Do I need to connect this clause with "then"?

I'm writing an essay for school and would like to confirm whether a sentence I wrote is grammatically correct or not.

  • "....should they not exercise prudence in this matter, efforts of environment preservation will be of no great consequence."
  • "...should they not exercise prudence in this matter, then efforts of environment preservation will be of no great consequence."

Do I need to include "then" after the comma? Which one is more grammatically correct? Thank you
