Do I need to add the "had" for correct past tense?

I describe how Kaganos recovered the stone in the sentences before this so I wasn't sure if I needed to add "had" to this one to make it correct past tense and everything. In an attempt to stall while Kaganos (had) recovered the stone, Darlantan had fought alone against the five blue dragons, and even though he killed two of the blues, the silver dragon himself was mortally wounded.

Top answer

In an attempt to stall while Kaganos was recovering the stone, Darlantan had fought alone against the five blue dragons, and, even though he killed two of the blues, the silver dragon himself was mortally wounded. Without any other context, the past progressive is best to describe an ongoing action related to another a action ( in simple past tense) in the past.
