Do I need to add "had"?

Should I add "had" to this sentence to refrence an event that happened in the past? Leciane do Cirica went to talk with Cathan MarSevrin, the Grand Marshal of the Divine Hammer, before the Istaran forces attacked the magical stronghold, however, she had to flee before she could warn him of what (had) happened in Daltigoth.
