Do I need the 'to' ?

The only thing she could think of to calm her shaking hands was to take deep breaths.

do I need the to before the "take deep breaths" ?

is it ok without it?

I think you may only leave out the to particle here if a form of 'do' comes before 'was'. For example: The only thing she could do was take deep breaths.

I think you may only leave out the to particle here if a form of 'do' comes before 'was'.

For example:

The only thing she could do was take deep breaths.
