Do I need the second 'had'?

The 'her troops' refers to Abrena.

I suppose that's OK, as long as your readers are familiar with the *** of the various characters and with the overall story.

But I often have to read your always lengthy sentences twice to figure out the pronouns. Have you ever considered writing more simply sometimes?

Thanks. My readers are familiar with the different characters and I try to write more simple sentences, but my natural style is the longer variety.
