Do I need "the" in this sentence?

I'd like to know what difference it makes if I include "the" or don't in the following sentence.

You can safely say that (the) books you read in your childhood shapes your world view.

I am terrible with "the" , especially when I write this kind of general statemtent. I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me how you usually decide to include the in a sentence.

I would use "the" because it refers to specific books, such as Dr. Seuss, Curious Gerge, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, etc. But "the" is optional.

I see. So if I wanted to use "books" instead of "the books," the sentence would be something like the following? Books play a very important role in our lives.
