Do I need a comma in this sentence?

*Do I need a comma after the word 'spread' in this sentence?

Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden expected all of the alpha particles to pass straight through the gold because the positive charge within gold atoms is widely spread* and is therefore not strong enough to deflect the relatively dense alpha particles.
