Do I always have to put a comma in a compound sentence?

Example: "The bird likes to eat crumbs, and the rabbit likes to eat sticks."

Do I always have to include a comma in sentences like the one above?

Generally speaking, unless we are talking about a specific bird or rabbit, when we refer to a general statement, like the one above, "the" can be omitted. i.e.

Birds like crumbs, and rabbits like carret sticks.
