Do Brits spell UK with periods? U.K. or UK?

As a U.S. based office, we deal with a London office and we put periods between UK as U.K. They insist it is not correct in the United kingdom to write it this way. Is that true?

I would say that UK writers do not use periods in this way at all nowadays

The official government website for the UK is at direct.gov.uk and I couldn't find any periods in abbreviations at all: UK, US, EU and so on. In fact, N.A.T.O. is now Nato

So I think your correspondents are right

(However, usa.gov, according to their site, is the U.S. government's off
