Could you please comment on these two questions? Which one is correct?

How does an elephant and a lion feed their offspring?
or How *do* an elephant and a lion feed their offspring?

Since the answer to the question would be different for elephants and lions, it would seem logical to ask the question as:
"How do elephants and lions feed their offspring?"
"How does an elephant feed its offspring?" and "How does a lion feed its offspring?"
