Actually, the above two sentences have the same and exact meaning. The only difference between them is that for the second sentence, there should be a continuous sentence. That is, 'We do know he is guilty, but that doesn't mean he has to be sent to jail'.

Hi Saltukhan,

What I think is that you are emphsising the fact that 'we' know he is guilty if you say 'we do know he is guilty', whereas you are just stating that 'we' know he is guilty if you say 'we know he is guilty'.

Best wishes,

It's called emphatic do, and it's used in situations of contrast, often in contrast with don't, as in the following exchange.

-- You don't know he is guilty.
-- Yes, we do. We do know he is guilty.

Ah, I see. Thank you for explaining that, Calif Jim.Emotion: smile

I wonder if you could provide me with an example as to when you would

You're right; other kinds of contrast without don't are possible.

Police detectives arrived on the scene and examined the evidence. The spokeman said, "We can't be sure yet, but it does look like a suicide." (We must admit that it certainly looks like a suicide.)
_____

And instead of contrast, you might have emphatic agreement.
